My anger is nothing compared to Jesus' anger.

JohnAnonymous Ahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17768828997668534260noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8944376875445787823.post-64219163618839183032009-11-13T19:55:38.145-05:002009-11-13T19:55:38.145-05:00OK, after posting my previous comment, I thought t...OK, after posting my previous comment, I thought that people might not look up Matthew 23. I’m copying it and posting it here, so you can see that Jesus was really boiling MAD!

Imagine him saying this stuff to the religious right who oppose marriage equality in God’s name. (And then keep following him on the rest of his journey.)

13"Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You shut the kingdom of heaven in men's faces. You yourselves do not enter, nor will you let those enter who are trying to.[c]

15"Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You travel over land and sea to win a single convert, and when he becomes one, you make him twice as much a son of hell as you are.

16"Woe to you, blind guides! You say, 'If anyone swears by the temple, it means nothing; but if anyone swears by the gold of the temple, he is bound by his oath.' 17You blind fools! Which is greater: the gold, or the temple that makes the gold sacred? 18You also say, 'If anyone swears by the altar, it means nothing; but if anyone swears by the gift on it, he is bound by his oath.' 19You blind men! Which is greater: the gift, or the altar that makes the gift sacred? 20Therefore, he who swears by the altar swears by it and by everything on it. 21And he who swears by the temple swears by it and by the one who dwells in it. 22And he who swears by heaven swears by God's throne and by the one who sits on it.

23"Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You give a tenth of your spices—mint, dill and cummin. But you have neglected the more important matters of the law—justice, mercy and faithfulness. You should have practiced the latter, without neglecting the former. 24You blind guides! You strain out a gnat but swallow a camel.

25"Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You clean the outside of the cup and dish, but inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence. 26Blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of the cup and dish, and then the outside also will be clean.

27"Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You are like whitewashed tombs, which look beautiful on the outside but on the inside are full of dead men's bones and everything unclean. 28In the same way, on the outside you appear to people as righteous but on the inside you are full of hypocrisy and wickedness.

29"Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You build tombs for the prophets and decorate the graves of the righteous. 30And you say, 'If we had lived in the days of our forefathers, we would not have taken part with them in shedding the blood of the prophets.' 31So you testify against yourselves that you are the descendants of those who murdered the prophets. 32Fill up, then, the measure of the sin of your forefathers!

33"You snakes! You brood of vipers! How will you escape being condemned to hell? 34Therefore I am sending you prophets and wise men and teachers. Some of them you will kill and crucify; others you will flog in your synagogues and pursue from town to town. 35And so upon you will come all the righteous blood that has been shed on earth, from the blood of righteous Abel to the blood of Zechariah son of Berekiah, whom you murdered between the temple and the altar. 36I tell you the truth, all this will come upon this generation.Kittredge Cherryhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02617858676733169316noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8944376875445787823.post-42417564468614050992009-11-13T19:49:30.683-05:002009-11-13T19:49:30.683-05:00Sometimes there is righteous anger. Jesus himself...Sometimes there is righteous anger. Jesus himself also got angry at religious hypocrisy. Think of how he turned over the tables of the money changers in front of the Temple. Or read his rant in Matthew 23, where he goes on and on like this:

13"Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You shut the kingdom of heaven in men's faces. You yourselves do not enter, nor will you let those enter who are trying to.”

Nothing made Jesus more angry than when religious leaders made petty rules that discouraged people from connecting with God -- like today’s conservatives with their “God hates fags” lies.

I think the Bible includes Jesus’ angry side so that we can accept our anger, too -- and then turn our anger into motivation to become part of the solution.

Thanks for inviting me to comment on this post.Kittredge Cherryhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02617858676733169316noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8944376875445787823.post-31698221223012638452009-11-08T10:12:32.736-05:002009-11-08T10:12:32.736-05:00Hi Michael,
Our society and the Federal Judiciary...Hi Michael,

Our society and the Federal Judiciary have both been tolerant of many prejudices in the past and we are currently tolerant of prejudice where we should not be. As I said, “separate but equal never works.” I know that many women and young ladies would agree with me. I’m equally sure that others would not. I am aware that it is possible to have disagreement about what constitutes prejudice. In fact, therein lies the problem. Where does one draw the line when confronting a rational such as yours?

JohnAnonymous Ahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17768828997668534260noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8944376875445787823.post-67765269647144851122009-11-07T20:35:29.106-05:002009-11-07T20:35:29.106-05:00Our society, as well as the federal judiciary, has...Our society, as well as the federal judiciary, has been tolerant of separate but equal when it comes to gender.

I have no problem with boys and girls having separate but equal education facilities.Michael Ejercitohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10707862691472293497noreply@blogger.com
